EU Funded Projects of Common Interest - PCI

Considering the current geopolitical environment, energy security of supply is the main objective of the European Union and a prerequisite for ensuring flexibility and access to diversified supply sources.

The European Union allocated a total budget of EUR 4.7 billion for 2014 – 2020 through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to encourage the development of the trans-European energy infrastructures through the implementation of potentially strategic projects.

According to Regulation (EU) No. 347/2013, through CEF ENERGY, project promoters have the possibility to obtain EU funds for the funding of the projects which have obtained the status of European Projects of Common Interest (PCI), conditional on their compliance with the eligibility criteria.

On 18 November 2015 the European Commission adopted a list of 195 Projects of Common Interest for electricity, gas, oil and smart grids. 77 of the projects are in the gas sector, among them being the projects proposed by TRANSGAZ.

The priority project envisaged by TRANSGAZ is The Development of the Romanian Gas Transmission System along Bulgaria – Romania – Hungary – Austria Route - BRUA Stage 1, and foresees the integration of the National Transmission System (NTS) into the European Network by increasing the degree of  interconnection with the neighbouring Bulgarian gas transmission system (to the Southern Corridor) and Hungarian gas transmission system (to the Central European transmission system).

Thus on 12.10.2015 TRANSGAZ submitted an application for funding at the European Commission – Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA), which was validated by the CEF Committee on 19.01.2016 in the list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI) proposed for obtaining grants through the CEF; the list was adopted through the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/89 of 18 November 2015 amending Regulation (EU) No. 347/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council and may be accessed at: https://ec.europa.eu/energy/en/news/energy-eu-invests-217-million-euros-energy-infrastructure
